Nevada lawmakers move to regulate Flock license plate readers amid privacy concerns
LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Social media across the valley has been dominated by a growing debate over Flock cameras, also known as automated license plate readers, as the devices spread across intersections, HOA entrances and shopping centers.
The cameras are installed in locations throughout the valley, but Nevada currently has no state law governing the use of Flock cameras by law enforcement or private security.
Late last month, the Nevada Legislature’s Interim Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to have staff draft a bill to regulate the cameras for next year’s legislative session.
A few days later, the Nevada Latino Legislative Caucus called for law enforcement to stop using the cameras until legal safeguards are in place.
With the technology expanding and lawmakers signaling interest in regulation, questions remain about how the cameras became so widespread and what rules could be put in place next year.
